Grandpa Camp: Great Literature Series

As I was growing up, every Sunday morning as we were turned loose from my mother in our sabbath finery, we'd go down to the living room where my father would finish up our hair with a pocket comb. Then he would read to us from the funny papers until it was time to leave for church. He would have to explain some of the comic strips to us when we didn't understand.
Here he is reading Calvin and Hobbes to the boys in the same spot. He bequeathed a number of the old paperback books to Will when he was just a preschooler, and Will essentially taught himself to read with them. Sometimes this led to interesting conversations, like the one where he asked what a lobotomy is. Other times it got him into trouble, like when he and Sarah tried to play Calvin and Suzie and poured water onto the tile floor so they could watch people slip like in the cartoon.
