Monterey: Aquarium and Dunes

On the way to the beach, we had to hit the obligatory spots: Blue Haired Betty's for scones, Andy's fruit stand for stone fruits, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
This was Sebastian's favorite feature at the aquarium: the wave room. It's a conservatory that gets sprayed by the waves at regular intervals. He and Kiecoo would count between waves, and every time he would jump and squeal with delight.
I love this picture. It bespeaks kids who have been in the car. Kids who have finally arrived. Kids who have forgotten just how cold the Pacific really is.
So this is what it's all about: skittering through waves until your lips are blue. Then your parents drag you out of the surf and wrap you, teeth chattering, into your towel. They haul you up to the showers where they exfoliate the sand and most of the skin right off of you, then pop you into the hot tub. When your cheeks are pink and you're so hot that your freckles are hopping on one foot, you mince your way barefoot and steaming back to the house for food. Then you start all over again!
