Insanity in the Alps!

This was our hike down the Dorfgastein mountain (whose name is something like Shoeflicker in German). If you go back and look at the picture of the garden, you can see exactly where we went. We rode two ski lifts up to the top of the mountain, where we left Maddie, Sebastian, Liam and Will sipping cocoa in the ski lodge. Then we hiked down to the midpoint, examining what our guide called "positive and negative places" which were also categorized into their yin and yangness (I am still mystified by the postive yin and negative yang places . . .). As you can see, there was snow on top of the mountain. And it continued to snow and blow as we hiked. Rob started muttering something about Donner Party of Five, and nominated our student Cheryl (above, with the pink purse) the One to Eat First. Thankfully, we made it down to another mountain farmhouse where they fed us "krapfen" (the jelly donut where the jelly doesn't make it inside). You can see the woman frying them here. Rob asked her how long her family had had this alm, and she said "always". After our brief warming stop, we hiked the rest of the way on the "mushroom path" where we saw many many mushrooms, and even more cowpies. It was muddilicious! It was pure insanity, and I'm really glad that we did it.
